Marketing Maven Award of the Week: iAttire, Dress Your iPod if You Dare

Posted in Marketing by Wendy Maynard on the January 24th, 2006

It’s unbelievable to me what lengths people will take to accessorize. But, since there is an entire company that is based on outfits and costumes for iPods, there must be quite a large pool of individuals who enjoy this sort of inanity. Without further ado, I bring you iAttire. This company produces hand-crafted costumes for iPods.

And, I bestow iAttire with the Marketing Maven Award of the Week for their incredible creativity in finding a niche.

And, that’s all I have to say about that.

Hugs, Wendy Maynard

Attract More Customers by Making Time for Marketing

Posted in Advertising, Communication, Marketing, Online Marketing, Promotion, Sales, Success, Writing by Wendy Maynard on the January 23rd, 2006

To start seeing remarkable success, you must make time for marketing. Many people tend to make their marketing a low priority. Instead of including it as a part of your weekly routine, you may find yourself scrambling to try and find customers only when business is slow. Create more room in your week for marketing by restructuring your time and task management. Here are some tips:

1. Commit to marketing every week: Your first step is to go to your calendar and carve out slots of time to work on your marketing — this includes sales, networking, writing, presentations, and so on. Schedule uninterrupted time for marketing in the part of the day when you are the most productive.

2. Eliminate timewasters: We can all find a bajillion ways to procrastinate including Internet surfing, playing online games, watching TV, and reading e-mails. Make a commitment to yourself that you will put aside your favorite time waster. If you cut back on these things, you’ll be amazed at how much you can do. Remember, your marketing is an investment in YOU and the long-term success of your business.

3. Chunk up your time: For your essential tasks and your marketing, make chunks of times to work on similar activities. For example, push sales calls and customer call-backs into one slot on your weekly calendar. Block out sessions for creating new products or service lines. Only check your e-mails once or twice a day, answering them all at one time.

4. Develop a marketing system: You can create a simple spreadsheet, make notes in your planner, or sketch out activities on a large flipchart sheet on the wall. The point is to make an annual profile of your marketing activities including: events, trade shows, advertising deadlines, direct mailings, seminars, and so on. Schedule marketing and stick to it!

5. Make marketing a habit: Commit to making marketing into a weekly habit. This means that even when you are busy, you still schedule time in your week for marketing, networking, speaking, making follow-up calls, coffee dates, and keeping in touch with past customers and referrers. Marketing is an ongoing activity for the lifetime of your business.

Commit to marketing and your business will grow as a result. You won’t have to scramble to sell yourself when times are slow because your pipeline will stay full. This will lead to the ability to turn away less desirable work, raise your prices, and make more money! Your ongoing marketing efforts will ensure your business is predictable, pleasant, and profitable.

Hugs and success,

Big Head Caps: Marketing Maven Award of the Week!

Posted in Marketing by Wendy Maynard on the January 20th, 2006

Big Head Caps get the Marketing Maven Award of the Week!

I recently wrote about Targeting a Niche as a successful strategy for small business owners and entrepreneurs. Here’s a real-world examples.

Check out Big Head Caps: their niche? Those of you with endowed cranial capacity.

Here’s one of their testimonials:

“For the first time in my 65 years, I’ve been able to wear a cap which doesn’t fit so tight it gives me a headache and doesn’t look like a little beanie with a visor.”

Apparently celebrities like Jay Leno, George Foreman, and Rosie O’Donnell are all self-proclaimed big heads. So if, you’ve got a big head, you’re in good company! Oh - and apparently people with big heads are smarter. Click here to read the studies.

And now, I’m off to San Francisco for a seminar. Have a fabulous weekend!

Hugs and success,

Want More Business? Be Remarkable.

Posted in Business, Creativity, Customer, Internet, Marketing, Online Marketing, Promotion, Public Relations, Sales by Wendy Maynard on the January 17th, 2006

Take a simple, ordinary service and make it amazing, memorable, and downright remarkable! You can do this with your own business. Find a way to create buzz and to make your offerings absolutely unique. As a result, you will easily attract more business, get more media attention, and have more fun. Oh, and you’ll get to charge more for being unique!

Here is an example that I love: An enterprising entrepreneur has taken a boring taxi ride and turned it into a magical event. It’s called Ultimate Taxi and is based in Aspen, Colorado.

Owner Jon Barnes has installed a wireless, high-speed Internet connection and a webcam. Riders are featured on Barnes’ website. But, that’s not all (as Ronco would say). There is a sophisticated light show with 9 lasers, 14 miniature stage lights, and a revolving disco ball. It also includes a haze machine at his passengers’ feet. There is a keyboard, drum machine, and microphone. Barnes also stops to perform a magic trick or plays his saxophone for riders. The cost? Oh, about $150 ride.

Can you do the same thing with your business? Heck yes, you can! (goodness, I think I just channeled Napoleon Dynamite for a moment.) Don’t be scared, go ahead and be remarkable!

Solve a Problem to SELL!

Posted in Business, Communication, Customer, Marketing, Online Marketing, Promotion, Sales, Success, Writing by Wendy Maynard on the January 13th, 2006

People don’t buy things. They buy solutions to problems; they want to fulfill a desire or meet a need. It should be specific and real…AND you should care about their problem. Examples of powerful motivators include making money, saving money, having more time, reducing effort, decreasing stress, increasing comfort, good health, being fit, losing weight, eliminating pain, being well known and sought after, better relationships, romance, and praise.

So, what keeps your customers up at night? What is their biggest concern on a daily basis? How are they feeling about their problem? And what unique solution to you provide to their problem? Don’t get sidetracked by describing your service or product – stay focused on solving their problem.

ACTION ITEM: If your marketing materials are focused on helping your target audience solve a problem, you will PULL them in. Take a look at your website, brochure, and other marketing materials. Do they ask key questions of your audience? Do you offer a unique solution? If not, rework the copy to turn them into a powerful sales force!

Hugs and success,

Google Adwords: A New Form of Ancient Poetry

Posted in Advertising, Blog, Business, Communication, Creativity, Internet, Marketing, Online Marketing, Weblog, Writing by Wendy Maynard on the January 11th, 2006

Okay, I’m on a word kick this week. It’s what I do every day. I think about words. So, check this out…

The Haiku is a form of Japenese poetry. According to Wikipedia:

“Haiku is one of the most important modes of Japanese poetry, a late 19th century revision by Masaoka Shiki of the older hokku (発句), the opening verse of a linked verse form, haikai no renga . A traditional hokku consists of a pattern of approximately 5, 7, and 5 morae, phonetic units which only partially correspond to the syllables of languages such as English.”

And, here is a Haiku about marketing by Mike Shultz that follows the 5-7-5 format.

“Have too much free time.
Needing projects…get me leads!
Please buy more from me.”

Which leads me to…

Have you ever written a Google Ad using Adwords? Those are the small text ads you see when you do a search. They are in the column on the right of the page. They are like Haikus! You have limited space and have to get your message across in a compelling way. Fascinating!

Here is an example of a Google Ad that I wrote for my Marketing Maven website (I’ve included their character specs):

Business Marketing Maven
(Max 25 characters)
Skyrocket Sales & Make More Money (Max 35 characters)
Free Marketing Tips and Strategies (Max 35 characters)
www.GoMarketingMaven.com (Max 35 characters)

So, now if I reword this to fit both the adword constraints and the Haiku parameters, it looks like this:

Marketing Maven (Max 25 characters)(5 syllables)
Skyrocket Sales, Make More Cash (Max 35 characters)(7 syllables)
Success Tips For You (Max 35 characters)(5 syllables)

Hee! hee! hee! What do you think?

Okay - your turn. Submit your Google Adword Haiku in the comments section. Go on! I dare you!

Hugs and success,

Wendy Maynard
