Hairless Cat Breeders: Marketing Maven Award of the Week

Posted in Advertising, Business, Creativity, Customer, Internet, Marketing, Online Marketing, Promotion, Research, Success, Weblog by Wendy Maynard on the February 28th, 2006

Every time I think I come across a weird niche, a stranger one comes across my screen.

So this week, I give the Marketing Maven Award of the Week to Belfry Sphinx. They appear to be breeders of two hairless cats: The Sphynx and The Kohona. Apparently there is a market for hairless cats. Soon, I expect to find a line of kitty costumes for hairless cats.

From the Belfry Sphinx website:

Sphynx have a high metabolism and they burn a lot of calories keeping warm. Besides having extremely good appetites they are extremely loving, extremely playful, extremely demanding, and extremely soft. Yes, soft! Their skin feels like the soft down on a child’s cheek. Extremely good natured…

Still I’m asked over and over again, “How could someone do that to a cat?” Someone didn’t… nature did! The Sphynx is a result of a spontaneous mutation, proving once again, that Mother Nature has the best sense of humor!

What IS a Kohana? The Kohana is the result of a mutation originating in Hawaii and is the ONLY true hairless breed of cat. It’s true! Kohana’s have no fuzz whatsoever… no hair follicles… Where a Sphynx feels like a warm peach, a Kohana feels more like a warm candle. To date, there are only 18 of these cats in existence, but they’ve stirred up a huge interest for such a small number.

So, I wonder how much a cat that feels like a warm candle costs?

How did you start raising hairless sphinx cats? I have an I- Search paper to do and I chose a report on hairless cats and I know very little on them so could you tell me?

That kitten reminds of of a wonton… or noodles of some kind.

I just bought my first hairless kitten because I love cats and my husband is allergic to cat dander, so hairless is the only way to go! I paid $1200 for her…expensive, but worth saving my husband’s allergies!

to the lady ‘kim garner’ who bought a hairless cat because her husband is allergic to cat dander, what where you thinking? I thought sphynx cats were ugly until i saw a kohana cat. the kittens look like a brain. I am a cat lover and never thought i would say that any kitten was ugly. To get a pet with no fur just seems very strange to me. You would have been better getting a siberian cat. These cats are hypoallergenic. I am going to be getting a siberian kitten at the end of the year and my breeder started breeding them because her husband was allergic to the persian cats she used to breed. They are very cute, huge, fluffy cats with dog like personalities. So anyone else out there who wants a cat but is allergic don’t think you have to resort to getting a mutant cat, the siberian is a much better alternative!

How on earth can you call them a mutant? They are a natural mutation built by mother natures own hands, and we all know she has a strange sense of humour :-). There are only 22 kohana cats that have ever been born in the world. I have been lucky enough to have two of them. I have also been lucky enough to be around many cats of many different breeds in my time, the siberian being one. As far as I know there is only one kitty that is truly hypoallergenic and that was created in a laboratory at a HUGE cost. The siberian is NOT a hypoallergenic cat, any cat that grooms itself which is every cat cannot be hypoallergenic. I would also say that unless you have lived with one, no one really has any right to comment. I am the lucky person that can. The kohana cat is the most incredible breed of cat I have ever had the good fortune to know, I was truly blessed the day that I met them. Jen Briggs Nudedudes sphynx and 2 adored pet kohana cats :-)

    Jennifer,
    I am curious….
How would I possibly go about being the proud owner of a Kohana?
We currently have 2 sphynx, twin boys Marshal & Thomas. I can’t think of any other kind of cat I would rather have now that the nakey kitties are in my children’s lives!
I do understand that they are EXTREMELY rare & that they would be rather expensive as well, but this doesn’t matter to me one bit.
Is this a breed that reproduces well? Or may there never be any more after the few who do exist are gone?
Will I ever have the chance to bring one into my family?

I have seen your adorable little ones, Maggot & Beetlejuice on your page & they are truly exceptional.
(I apologize if I spelled either of their names wrong)

It would be a shame if all of you guys couldn’t breed them into a larger number.

Good luck & bless all your babies!
I only wish I was so lucky.
